Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Updating iOS over Wi-Fi is the primary and most convenient way to get new features, security improvements, and bug fixes from Apple. Unlike updating via a computer, this method doesn't require additional software (iTunes or Finder) or a cable. You can start the process directly from your device, which is especially useful if you don't have access to a Mac or PC. After following this guide, your iPhone will be running the latest system version, improving its stability and security.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure the following conditions are met:
- Stable Wi-Fi connection. Use a home or trusted network with a strong signal. The iOS update can be several gigabytes, and a connection drop will cause an error.
- Battery charge. The battery level should be at least 50%. It's best to leave your iPhone on its charger for the entire process.
- Free space. Check how much storage is free:
Settings > General > [Your Device]. Downloading and unpacking the update typically requires at least 2-3 GB of free space. - Backup. Create a current backup in iCloud (
Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now) or on your computer. This is insurance in case something goes wrong. - Know your passcode. If a passcode is set on your device, you'll need it to confirm the installation.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Check and Start the Update
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Go to General.
- Select Software Update.
- The system will automatically check for a new iOS version. If an update is available, you'll see its description and size. Tap Download and Install.
- If the screen says "Up to Date" or "Update to iOS X.X", you are already on the latest version.
Step 2: Accept Terms and Download
- After tapping the download button, a screen with the license agreement will appear. Scroll through it and tap Agree in the bottom-right corner.
- The update file download will begin. You can see the progress in the Software Update section or on the Settings app icon. During this time, do not close the app or turn off your iPhone.
- Once the download finishes, the system will automatically start preparing for installation. You may need to enter your device passcode.
Step 3: Install and Reboot
- Once downloading and preparation are complete, tap Install Now. Your iPhone will enter installation mode.
- The device will automatically reboot. The Apple logo and a progress indicator (a line under the logo) will appear on the screen. Do not interrupt this process! Do not press buttons, and do not connect/disconnect any cables.
- After the first installation phase, your iPhone may reboot again. This is normal. On the third reboot, the device will start up with the new iOS version.
Step 4: Complete Setup
- After the final boot, you'll see the Hello screen. Go through the setup steps as you would on a first boot.
- You may be prompted for additional actions:
- Set up Face ID/Touch ID.
- Enter your Apple ID password (to update iCloud settings).
- Choose privacy settings (analytics, Siri, etc.).
- After completing all steps, you'll arrive at the home screen with the new iOS version.
Verify the Result
To confirm the update was successful:
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- The current iOS version will be displayed at the top of the screen (e.g., "Your iOS version is 17.4").
- You can also check the version in Settings > General > Your Device — look for the "Software Version" line.
If the Settings icon is missing from the home screen or the system is behaving erratically, the installation likely failed, and you'll need to repeat the update or restore via a computer.
Potential Issues
- "Not Enough Storage" error. Free up space by deleting unused apps, photos/videos (after uploading them to iCloud/Google Photos), or clearing cache.
- Update doesn't appear. Ensure your iPhone model supports the latest iOS version (typically iPhone 8 and newer for iOS 17+). Also, check if the latest build is already installed.
- Download failure ("Failed to download update"). Restart your iPhone and connect to a different, more stable Wi-Fi network. If the issue is with Apple's servers, wait a few hours.
- Stuck on the Apple logo. Force restart your iPhone (quickly press and release the volume up button, then the volume down button, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears). If that doesn't work, a restore via Finder/iTunes will be required.
- Wi-Fi network lost after update. Go to
Settings > Wi-Fiand reconnect to your network by entering the password. This is sometimes necessary due to network settings being reset during major updates.
