Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Resetting settings is a powerful tool for solving many problems on iPhone and iPad. It helps when the device runs slowly, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth malfunctions occur, system settings display incorrectly, or you plan to sell/give away the device. This guide covers all types of resets, so you can choose exactly the one that solves your problem without harming your personal data.
After completing this guide, you will have a device with clean, correct system settings, which often resolves issues without needing to visit a service center.
Requirements / Preparation
- Backup. Before starting, mandatorily create a backup of all data:
- Via iCloud:
Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. - Via computer: Connect the device to a Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes) and perform a backup.
- Via iCloud:
- Battery charge. Ensure the battery charge is at least 50%, or leave the device connected to power during the process.
- Apple ID and password. Know the password for the Apple ID associated with the device. It will be required to disable the Find My iPhone feature and for subsequent activation.
- Wi-Fi access. A stable Wi-Fi connection is required to restore from an iCloud backup or download an iOS update.
Step 1: Reset Settings (Reset Settings)
This option removes only system settings, without affecting your personal data (photos, messages, apps).
- Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset Settings.
- Enter the device passcode if prompted.
- Confirm the action. The device will restart, and network settings (saved Wi-Fi networks, passwords, Bluetooth devices), as well as keyboard, home screen, and location settings, will be restored to their default state.
💡 Tip: Use this method if you experience network connection issues, problems with Bluetooth devices, or if system sounds/brightness are not working correctly.

Step 2: Erase All Content and Settings (Erase All Content and Settings)
Full wipe. Use this method if you plan to give your iPhone to someone else, or if serious system errors persist despite other solutions. All data will be permanently deleted.
- Go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Select Erase All Content and Settings.
- If Find My iPhone is enabled, the system will ask for your Apple ID password to disable it.
- Confirm the action. The process will take several minutes. After completion, the device will restart as new.
⚠️ Important: The reset cannot proceed without disabling Find My iPhone. If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, use the service at
iforgot.apple.com.
Step 3: Reset via Computer (Recovery Mode)
This method is necessary if the device won't turn on, is stuck on the Apple logo, or you have forgotten the screen lock passcode.
- Prepare your computer:
- Mac: Ensure you have the latest version of macOS installed. Open Finder.
- Windows PC: Install the latest version of iTunes from the Microsoft Store or Apple's website.
- Put the iPhone/iPad into Recovery Mode:
- For models without a Home button: Quickly press and release the volume up button, then the volume down button. Hold the side button until the recovery mode screen appears (cable, iTunes/Finder icon).
- For models with a Home button: Hold the side (or top) button and the Home button simultaneously until the recovery mode screen appears.
- Restore:
- A message will appear on your computer in the Finder or iTunes window, indicating that recovery is possible. Click Restore.
- The program will automatically download the latest version of iOS and install it on the device, completely erasing it. This can take up to an hour depending on your internet speed.
- After completion, the device will restart. Set it up as new or restore from the backup you created earlier.
Step 4: Verify the Result
- After the reset, the device should boot to the standard "Hello" welcome screen in the default languages.
- Go through the initial setup: select language, region, connect to Wi-Fi.
- At the Apps & Data screen, choose:
- Restore from iCloud Backup (if you made one).
- Restore from Mac/PC Backup.
- Set Up as New iPhone/iPad (if you don't want old data).
- Ensure all basic functions work: calls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, sound, camera.
- Check that the current iOS version is displayed in Settings → General → About This iPhone.
Possible Issues
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| Cannot exit Recovery Mode | Ensure you are using an original Apple cable or a certified one. Try a different USB port. Force restart the device (quick button presses), then try entering Recovery Mode again. |
| Error 4013, 4005, 9 during restore via iTunes/Finder | This error is often related to an unstable USB connection or outdated software. Update macOS/iTunes to the latest version. Use a different cable and port. Try restoring on another computer. |
| Device stuck on Apple logo after reset | Perform a force restart: quickly press and release the volume up button, then the volume down button, and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. If that doesn't work, re-enter Recovery Mode and perform a restore. |
| Prompt for Apple ID password after reset (Activation Lock) | This is normal behavior for the Find My iPhone feature. Enter the Apple ID and password that were used on this device before the reset. If you don't remember the credentials, reset your password via iforgot.apple.com. |
| Not enough space to restore from backup | The backup was made on a device with more memory. An error may occur when restoring to a device with less storage. In this case, set up the device as new and transfer data manually (e.g., via iCloud.com or a computer). |
