Introduction / Why This Is Needed
The cache (temporary files) of iOS apps helps programs run faster by storing downloaded images, sessions, and data. However, over time it can swell to hundreds of megabytes or even gigabytes, taking up precious space on the device and sometimes causing crashes, loading errors, or slowdowns. This guide will help you safely clear the cache on an iPhone or iPad without deleting personal data and restore your device's responsiveness.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure that:
- You have iOS 15 or later (on iPad — iPadOS 15+).
- You are connected to Wi-Fi (for reinstalling apps if they are large).
- You know your Apple ID password (may be needed to reinstall paid or some free apps).
- Important: For apps where you are not signed into a cloud account (e.g., iCloud, Google Drive), reinstalling may lead to loss of data saved only locally. Create a backup via iCloud or a computer if you are unsure.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Check Current Memory Usage
First, you need to understand which apps are consuming the most space. Open Settings → General → iPhone/iPad Storage. Wait for the list to load.
Pay attention to two metrics for each app:
- App Size — the weight of the program itself.
- Documents & Data — your personal files and the cache. If this number significantly exceeds the app size (e.g., Instagram is 300 MB, but "Documents & Data" is 2 GB), that app is the prime candidate for cleanup.
Step 2: Cleanup via iOS Settings (Offloading the App)
This method removes the app itself but preserves its documents and data (including game saves, settings). After reinstalling, you will return to the same state, but the cache will be reset.
- In the same iPhone/iPad Storage section, find the target app.
- If the "Offload App" option is available for it, tap on it.
- Confirm "Offload App". The app will disappear from the screen, but its icon will remain in the App Store (cloud icon).
- To restore the app, find it in the App Store and tap "Download" (cloud icon).
⚠️ Important: This option is not always available. If it's not there, proceed to the next step.
Step 3: In-App Cleanup (If Supported)
Many popular messengers and social networks have a built-in tool for clearing the cache.
- WhatsApp: Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage → Clear Cache (or select specific chats).
- Telegram: Settings → Data and Storage → Clear Cache.
- Instagram: Settings → Account → Storage → Clear Cache.
- Spotify: Settings → Memory → Delete Cache.
- YouTube: Settings → Clear Cache (or in the "Playlists" section).
The process in each app may differ slightly, but the logic is usually similar: Settings → Search for the word "cache", "memory", or "data" → Clear.
Step 4: Reinstalling the App (Universal Method)
If the app has no built-in cleanup and offloading is unavailable, the most reliable method is a complete deletion and reinstall.
- Delete: On the home screen, press and hold the app icon until a menu appears. Select "Remove App" → "Delete App". This will delete both the app and all its data (cache, settings, local files).
- Reinstall: Open the App Store, search for the app, and tap "Download" (cloud icon).
- Sign In: After installation, open the app and sign into your account. Data synced to the cloud (e.g., chat history in WhatsApp, if iCloud/Google Drive backup is enabled) will restore automatically. Local files not uploaded to the cloud will be lost.
Step 5: Clearing Safari Cache (Browser)
Safari's cache can take up a lot of space, especially if you use the browser actively.
- Open Settings.
- Scroll down and find Safari.
- Tap "Clear History and Website Data".
- Confirm the action "Clear History and Data".
💡 Tip: This action will also delete all cookies and session data. You will need to log in to websites again.
Verifying the Result
- Go back to Settings → General → iPhone/iPad Storage.
- Wait 1-2 minutes for the system to recalculate space.
- Review how much the "Documents & Data" section has decreased for the cleaned apps.
- The total "Available" indicator at the top of the screen should increase.
- Launch the cleaned app. It might open slightly slower the first time (as it reloads data), but further operation should be smoother.
Potential Issues
- "Documents & Data" did not decrease after reinstalling. Ensure you deleted the app completely (not just removed the icon from the home screen). Check if the "iCloud Drive" or "Background App Refresh" option is enabled for the app, which might store data in the cloud separately from the local cache.
- The app does not ask for login/password after reinstalling. Some apps use iOS Keychain credentials, which persist even after app deletion. This is normal; you will remain signed in.
- No "Offload App" option for some programs. This is an iOS limitation. Such apps (especially system or security-related ones) can only be cleaned via their internal settings or full deletion.
- The app runs slower after cache cleanup. This is temporary. On the first launch, the app needs to reload all resources. After that, speed should return to normal or even improve.
- "Not Enough Space" error when trying to install. If free space is very low, iOS may not allow app installation. In this case, first delete a few unnecessary apps or videos to free up at least 200-500 MB, then retry the installation.
