What Does the ERR_UPDATE Error Mean
The system displays the message "Unable to Update iPhone/iPad" or "An error occurred while verifying the iOS update" when the package download or verification process is interrupted. The error appears in Settings → General → Software Update immediately after tapping the install button or during the archive extraction phase.
This does not indicate a hardware defect. In most cases, iOS fails to properly extract the OTA package due to insufficient resources, a dropped network connection, or a conflict with temporary system files.
Causes
- Unstable Wi-Fi or cellular network — large packages (2–8 GB) require a stable connection. If the connection drops, the system flags the file as corrupted.
- Insufficient storage for extraction — in addition to the update file itself, the system requires 3–5 GB for temporary files and backups.
- Corrupted update cache — a partially downloaded archive remains in storage and blocks subsequent attempts.
- Installed beta profiles — configuration files for test builds often conflict with Apple's release channels.
- Peak server load — during the first few hours after a major release, Apple's servers respond with delays, causing signature verification timeouts.
Solutions
Method 1: Force Restart the Device
Resetting temporary processes and the network stack often resolves installation blocks.
- Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Perform a force restart based on your model:
- iPhone 8 and later / iPad without a Home button: quickly press and release
Volume Up, thenVolume Down. Hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. - iPhone 7/7 Plus: hold
Volume Down+Power. - iPhone 6s and earlier / older iPads: hold
Home+Power.
- iPhone 8 and later / iPad without a Home button: quickly press and release
- After booting, connect to a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network and retry checking for the update.
💡 Tip: Avoid public Wi-Fi networks that require browser-based authentication. They drop the session during certificate updates, which triggers verification errors.
Method 2: Clear the iOS Update Cache
Deleting the corrupted file allows the system to download a fresh package from scratch.
- Open
Settings → General → iPhone Storage. - Wait for the app list to load and scroll down to
iOS [version]oriPadOS [version]. - Swipe left on the entry and tap
Delete Update. - Restart the device and return to
Software Update. Start the download again.
Method 3: Manually Free Up Storage
The system automatically suggests offloading apps when storage is low, but this mechanism can sometimes fail. It's better to free up space manually.
- In
iPhone Storage, sort apps by size. - Delete or offload (
Offload App) games and video editors you aren't currently using. - Clear browser cache:
Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. - Check the
Messagessection and delete attachments older than a year. - Ensure you have at least 5 GB of free space available, then retry the update.
Method 4: Update via Computer (iTunes / Finder)
A wired connection eliminates network and local storage errors. This is the most reliable method for recurring failures.
- Back up your data via iCloud or your computer.
- Connect the device to a PC or Mac using the original cable.
- Open
Finder(macOS Catalina and later) oriTunes/ theApple Devicesapp (Windows/macOS). - Select your device in the sidebar.
- Click
Check for Update. The system will download the full package and install it without deleting personal data.
⚠️ Important: Do not disconnect the cable during installation. If a passcode prompt appears on the screen, enter it on the computer or the device itself to complete the process.
Prevention
To prevent update errors from recurring, follow these simple guidelines:
- Keep at least 10% free storage on your device before major version releases.
- Update the system overnight or early in the morning when Apple's server load is minimal.
- Remove beta profiles immediately after switching to a stable release (
Settings → General → VPN & Device Management). - Regularly connect your device to a computer to create local backups — this ensures data safety in case of any OTA failure.
