What Error 491 Means
Error 491 on Android is a code that appears in the Google Play Store when attempting to download or update an app. It is typically accompanied by a message like: "Couldn't download the app due to error 491" or similar. The problem is not related to a specific app but indicates a failure in the store itself or its data on your device. After the error appears, downloading any apps from Google Play becomes impossible.
Causes
Error 491 occurs due to the following main reasons:
- Corrupted Google Play Store cache — accumulated temporary data becomes unreadable.
- Incorrect app data — after a system update or crash, Google Play data may end up in an inconsistent state.
- Insufficient free space — the device has less space available than required for installation.
- Internet connection issues — unstable network or blocking by the provider.
- Outdated Google Play Store version — a conflict between the app version and the system.
- Google account sync errors — a failure in account data synchronized with the Play Store.
Method 1: Clear Google Play Store Cache and Data
This is the most common and effective solution. It resets the app's temporary data, eliminating corruption.
- Open your Android device's Settings.
- Go to Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Find and select Google Play Store.
- Tap Storage (or Memory).
- First, tap Clear cache.
- Then, tap Clear data (or Delete data) and confirm the action.
- Restart your device.
- After restarting, try downloading the app from Google Play again.
⚠️ Important: Deleting data will not remove your Google account or purchase history, but it may reset some Play Store settings (for example, your wishlist).
Method 2: Check Free Space and Internet Connection
Ensure your device has enough space and that the network is stable.
- Free up memory: delete unnecessary files or apps, or move data to an SD card. Installing most apps requires at least 1.5 times more space than the APK size.
- Check the internet: open a browser and load a webpage. If the network is unstable, switch to a different Wi-Fi network or use mobile data.
- Disable VPN/firewalls temporarily during the download — they may block the connection to Google's servers.
Method 3: Update Google Play Store
An outdated store version may conflict with the system.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile avatar in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings → App updates (or General → Auto-update apps).
- If an update for Google Play Store is available, tap Update.
- You can also manually find Google Play Store in the store and tap Update.
Method 4: Remove and Re-add Your Google Account
The problem may lie in the account data synced with the Play Store.
- Open Settings → Accounts (or Users & accounts).
- Select your Google account.
- Tap Remove account and confirm.
- Restart your device.
- After restarting, go to Settings → Accounts and add your Google account again.
- Open the Google Play Store and try downloading the app.
Method 5: Reset Network Settings
If the issue is with network configurations, perform a reset.
- In Settings, find System (or General management).
- Select Reset (or Reset options).
- Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.
- Confirm the reset.
- After the reset, reconnect to your network and try downloading the app again.
Prevention
To avoid a recurrence of error 491:
- Regularly clear the Google Play Store cache every 1-2 months.
- Monitor free space on your device — leave at least 1 GB free.
- Keep Google Play Store updated automatically via settings.
- Use a stable internet connection, avoiding public Wi-Fi with restrictions.
- Do not install unofficial versions of Google Play — only use trusted sources.
