Introduction / Why This Is Needed
The "Storage Full" message is one of the most common problems for iPhone owners, especially models with 64 GB. The system slows down, updates and apps stop installing. This guide will help you quickly and safely free up 5 to 20 GB of space without deleting important data. We will review built-in iOS features and typical "memory eaters."
Requirements / Preparation
- Device on iOS 15.0 or later (the interface may differ slightly in older versions).
- Stable Wi-Fi connection (for syncing with iCloud when optimizing photos).
- Access to your Apple ID (required for managing subscriptions and iCloud).
- No root access or special tools required — everything is done through standard settings.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Analyze Current Storage Usage
First, you need to understand what exactly is taking up space.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Wait 10-20 seconds for the system to analyze the data.
- Review the colored bars at the top — these are categories (Photos, Apps, System Data, etc.).
- Scroll down to the "Recommendations" and "Apps" lists. iOS will suggest actions itself, for example, "Offload Unused Apps."
- Pay attention to apps with a size > 500 MB. Tap on them to see a breakdown of "Documents & Data" and the app itself.
💡 Tip: System Data (Other) can temporarily increase after an iOS update or when using apps like Safari. Usually, it decreases on its own after a few days.
Step 2: Automatic Photo Optimization
Photos and videos are the main "memory eaters." The solution is iCloud.
- Go to Settings → your name (Apple ID) → iCloud → Photos.
- Make sure the "iCloud Photos" option is enabled.
- Below, select "Optimize iPhone Storage".
- Confirm the action. The iPhone will start uploading originals to the cloud and replacing them with compact versions on the device. Important: an internet connection is required to access full-quality photos.
Step 3: Clearing Safari and Browser Cache
Web page cache accumulates quickly.
- For Safari: Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data. Confirm. This will delete cache, cookies, and history.
- For Chrome/Firefox: Open the app → Settings (three dots/menu) → Privacy Settings → Clear Browsing History, Clear Cache.
- After this, restart your iPhone.
Step 4: App Management — Deletion and Offloading
Use the data from Step 1.
- In the app list in iPhone Storage, find large candidates (social networks, games, editors).
- Tap on the app. You will see two options:
- "Offload App" — will delete the app itself but preserve its documents and data. Upon reinstallation from the App Store, everything will return. Recommended for rarely used but bulky apps (e.g., offline maps).
- "Delete App" — will erase everything permanently. Use for games you've already completed or unnecessary services.
- Critically important: For messengers (WhatsApp, Telegram) do not delete the app; instead, clear the history within it (see Step 5).
Step 5: Deep Cleaning of Messengers and Media
This is where the main volume of "junk" is hidden.
WhatsApp:
- Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and Data → Manage Storage.
- The system will show the largest files and chats. Select chats → "Select Files" → delete old videos/documents. You can also use "Free Up Space" for mass cleanup.
Telegram:
- Settings → Data and Storage → Storage.
- Tap "Clear Cache" (will delete temporary files but not content). For a full cleanup: "Clear History" in each large chat or "Delete All Cached Files".
VK, Instagram: In the app settings, look for sections like "Storage," "Cache," or "Free Up Space."
Step 6: Deleting Offline Music and Video Files
Apple apps and third-party services store downloaded media files.
- Apple Music / Apple TV: Settings → Music / TV → Downloaded Music/Movies. Delete tracks and films you no longer listen to or watch.
- Spotify, YouTube Music: Open the app → Library → Downloads. Delete playlists/albums you've already listened to.
- Podcasts: In the "Podcasts" app → Settings → Clear Old Episodes.
Step 7: Verification and Final Actions
- Go back to Settings → General → iPhone Storage and wait for the statistics to update.
- Ensure you have enough free space (at least 1-2 GB for comfortable operation).
- Restart your iPhone (power button → "Power Off," then turn it on). This will complete the cleanup of temporary system files.
- Set up a regular routine check every 1-2 months, repeating steps 3-6.
Verifying the Result
- Primary method: Go back to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The free space graph should have grown significantly.
- Signs of success: The device stops showing the "Storage Full" notification, iOS and app updates install, and performance improves.
- Numerical benchmark: After a full cleanup (including photos), you can free up from 5 GB to 20+ GB depending on the initial storage fill level.
Potential Issues
⚠️ Issue: After clearing Safari cache, some sites require you to log in again. Solution: This is normal. You will need to re-authorize on several sites. This is the trade-off for freeing up space and improving privacy.
⚠️ Issue: Photo optimization doesn't start or gets stuck. Solution: Ensure the iCloud Photos option is enabled and you have free space in your iCloud account (at least the size of the "difference" between optimized and original photos). Check your Wi-Fi connection.
⚠️ Issue: There is still a lot of space in the "System Data" (Other) section (>10 GB). Solution: This could be map cache (Apple Maps, Google Maps), app updates, or logs. You can only fully clear it via Reset Settings (Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Settings). Caution: this will delete all settings (Wi-Fi passwords, icon layout) but will not affect photos and apps. Do this as a last resort.
⚠️ Issue: After deleting an app, its data still occupies space. Solution: Some apps (especially games) store data in iCloud or the shared Documents folder. Check Settings → App Name → is there an option "Delete Data"? Also check iCloud → Manage Storage → Backups (old device backups can take up gigabytes).
