Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Over time, an iPhone may start to slow down: apps take a long time to open, the interface "freezes," and the system responds to touches with a delay. This is usually due to the accumulation of temporary files, suboptimal background process settings, deteriorating battery health, or outdated software. This guide will help you perform a comprehensive optimization of iOS performance without losing personal data. After completing these steps, you will notice improved system responsiveness, faster app launches, and smoother interface operation.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure that:
- You have an iPhone 8 or newer (or an iPad with iPadOS 15+).
- The latest version of iOS is installed (iOS 16 or 17 is recommended).
- It is recommended to create a backup via iCloud or a computer (Settings → Your Name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now).
- The battery charge is at least 50%.
- Connection to a Wi-Fi network for downloading updates.
Step 1: Assess the Current State
First, determine which apps or processes consume the most resources.
- Open Settings → General → iPhone/iPad Storage (or Battery depending on your iOS version).
- In the Storage section, pay attention to:
- Memory Usage: If free space is less than 500 MB, the system will actively load data from the disk, slowing down operation.
- App list by memory usage: Find "heavy" apps (especially those you don't use often).
- In the Battery section, check:
- Battery Health level (at the bottom of the page). If the maximum capacity is below 80%, battery degradation may cause processor throttling.
- Background Activity: Apps that are actively running in the background can consume resources.
💡 Tip: If you see an unknown app with high memory or battery consumption, delete it after verifying it.
Step 2: Clean Temporary Files and Cache
The accumulation of cache, temporary files, and unused data slows down the system.
- Clear Safari cache:
- Open Settings → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
- Confirm the action. This will delete cache, cookies, and history, but not bookmarks and saved passwords.
- Clear app cache:
- For most apps: delete the app → reinstall it from the App Store. This completely clears its data.
- For some apps (e.g., social networks), there is built-in clearing: open the app → Settings → Clear Cache.
- Delete unnecessary files:
- Open the Files app → Browse → Recent or iCloud Drive.
- Delete old documents, downloads, duplicate photos/videos.
- Check the "Recently Deleted" section and empty it.
- Clear cache for third-party apps (e.g., messengers):
- In Settings → General → iPhone Storage, find the app and select "Offload App" (preserves documents), then reinstall it.
Step 3: Manage Background Processes
Background processes can significantly load the CPU and memory.
- Disable background app refresh:
- Settings → App Store → App Updates → turn off "App Updates".
- Limit background app activity:
- Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
- Turn it off for apps that don't require constant updates (news, social networks, games).
- Disable unnecessary system services:
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → turn off for apps that don't need access.
- Settings → General → AutoFill → turn off if you don't use it.
- Manage notifications:
- Settings → Notifications → for each app, select "Off" or "Banners" instead of "On Lock Screen" to reduce load.
Step 4: Update the Operating System
Apple regularly releases iOS updates with performance optimizations and bug fixes.
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi and a charger (recommended).
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- If an update is available, tap "Download and Install".
- After installation, the iPhone will restart. The system may work slower for the first few hours after the update (file indexing) — this is normal.
⚠️ Important: Ensure you have enough free space (at least 5-10 GB) for the update. If space is low, perform cleaning (Step 2) before updating.
Step 5: Configure Resource-Saving Settings
Enable modes that reduce load on the CPU and memory.
- Low Power Mode:
- Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode → turn on.
- This mode reduces background process performance but significantly extends battery life. Can be set to turn on automatically at 20% charge.
- Disable visual effects:
- Settings → Accessibility → Motion → Reduce Transparency and Reduce Motion.
- Also in Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Settings (does not delete data) — sometimes helps if visual effects "freeze."
- Manage automatic downloads:
- Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Automatic Downloads → turn off for unnecessary apps.
Step 6: Check Battery Health and Troubleshoot
Battery degradation is a common cause of throttling (CPU frequency reduction).
- Check Maximum Capacity in Settings → Battery → Battery Health.
- If the figure is below 80%, consider replacing the battery at an authorized Apple service center.
- In the same section, check if Low Power Mode is enabled. If yes, and you charge your phone frequently, this is normal.
- If the battery is healthy but the iPhone overheats (e.g., during gaming), let it cool down. Overheating causes throttling.
Step 7: Force Restart
A simple restart clears RAM and terminates "frozen" processes.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
- After restarting, check system responsiveness.
Step 8: Reset Settings (Last Resort)
If the previous steps didn't help, perform a system settings reset. This will NOT delete your data (photos, apps, documents).
- Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset Settings.
- Enter your password and confirm.
- The iPhone will restart. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi, enter passwords for saved networks, but all apps and data will remain.
⚠️ Important: Do not confuse with "Erase All Content and Settings" — the latter completely wipes the device.
Checking the Result
After completing all steps, evaluate performance:
- Launch several heavy apps (e.g., games or video editors) — launch time should be reduced.
- Scroll through long lists (contacts, photos) — the interface should be smooth.
- Check if random "stutters" when switching between apps have disappeared.
- Compare battery life (if you enabled Low Power Mode, it may increase).
If the problem persists, the issue may be hardware-related (faulty storage, processor) — contact an Apple service center.
Possible Issues
Issue: After clearing the cache, the app requires relogin
Solution: This is normal. The cache stored sessions. Simply log in again. For important apps (bank, email), ensure you know passwords or have access to two-factor authentication.
Issue: After disabling background refresh, apps don't receive notifications
Solution: Some apps (messengers) require background refresh for timely notifications. Enable background refresh only for critical apps in Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
Issue: Low Power Mode slows down the system too much
Solution: Turn off Low Power Mode if maximum performance is important. Use it only when the battery is low.
Issue: After resetting settings, Wi-Fi passwords and Apple Watch settings are gone
Solution: This is expected. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and re-pair your Apple Watch. Ensure you have network passwords and your Apple ID credentials.
Issue: iPhone still lags after all manipulations
Solution: Check if "heavy" apps are installed (especially non-App Store ones). Delete suspicious ones. If the problem persists, hardware repair may be needed (battery, storage replacement). Create a backup and contact Apple Support.
