Introduction / Why This Is Needed
iPhone synchronization with a computer is a key process for backing up data, transferring media files, and managing content. When this process breaks, users lose access to important data or cannot update their music/movie libraries. This guide solves the most common problems faced by iPhone owners on Windows and macOS, including connection errors, trust prompts, and iTunes/Finder failures.
After completing this guide, you will be able to:
- Reliably sync contacts, calendars, notes, and media files.
- Eliminate errors like
0xE,-50, and other failure codes. - Set up wireless synchronization over Wi-Fi.
- Understand the root causes of issues and prevent them in the future.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure you have:
- An iPhone with a working Lightning port and at least 10% battery charge.
- An original Apple cable or an MFi-certified cable. Cheap uncertified cables are a common cause of problems.
- A computer:
- Windows 10/11: The latest version of iTunes installed (not from the Microsoft Store).
- macOS Catalina 10.15 or newer: The built-in Finder app (iTunes is no longer used).
- macOS Mojave 10.14 or older: The iTunes app.
- A stable internet connection for software updates.
- Sufficient free space on your computer for a backup (usually 1-2 times the size of your iPhone's storage).
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Basic Diagnostics: Restart and Check the Cable
Most often, the problem lies in a simple communication glitch or a faulty cable.
- Disconnect your iPhone from the computer.
- Restart both devices: Hold the power button on your iPhone and select "Power Off", then turn it back on. Perform a standard reboot on your computer.
- Connect your iPhone to a different USB port on the computer, preferably directly on the motherboard (avoid USB hubs and ports on keyboards or the front PC panel).
- Try a different cable, ideally an original Apple one.
💡 Tip: On Windows, check if your iPhone appears in Device Manager (Win+R →
devmgmt.msc). Under "Portable Devices", it should be listed without a yellow exclamation mark.
Step 2: Update System Software
Mismatched versions of iOS and iTunes/Finder are the second most common cause of failures.
- On iPhone: Go to Settings → General → Software Update. Install all available updates.
- On Mac (Finder):
- Open System Settings → Software Update. Install all macOS updates.
- Ensure you are running macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer. Older versions use iTunes.
- On Windows (iTunes):
- Launch iTunes.
- From the menu, select Help → Check for Updates.
- Do not use iTunes from the Microsoft Store — this version often has limitations. Download the installer from the official Apple website.
Step 3: Check and Reset Trust Settings
If the "Trust This Computer" dialog doesn't appear or appears repeatedly, perform a reset.
- On your iPhone, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset.
- Select Reset Location & Privacy (this resets trust settings).
- Connect your iPhone to the computer via cable.
- The "Trust" prompt should reappear on your iPhone screen. Tap "Trust".
- You may need to enter your device passcode on the computer (in iTunes/Finder) if one is set.
Step 4: Alternative Method: Wi-Fi Sync (iTunes Only)
If USB sync is unstable, you can set up wireless synchronization.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer via USB.
- In iTunes (Windows) or Finder (Mac), select your iPhone from the sidebar or near the Finder window.
- In the "General" or "Summary" section, find the option "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi" and check the box.
- Click "Apply" or "Done".
- On your iPhone, open Settings → General → Wi-Fi Sync and ensure the option is enabled.
- Now your iPhone and computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Your iPhone will periodically appear in iTunes/Finder for syncing even without a cable.
Step 5: Reset Sync Settings in iTunes/Finder
Conflicting media sync settings can cause errors.
- Connect your iPhone to the computer.
- In iTunes/Finder, select your device.
- Go to the "Music", "Movies", "Podcasts", etc. tabs (depending on what you sync).
- Uncheck all boxes for "Sync Music/Movies" options.
- Click "Apply" at the bottom of the window. iTunes/Finder will remove previously synced media content from your iPhone.
- Re-check the boxes for the categories you want to sync and select specific playlists or files.
- Click "Apply" or "Sync". The process will start fresh with a clean slate.
Step 6: Backup and Restore in DFU Mode (Last Resort)
If none of the above methods work, the problem might be with the iPhone's system file. Create an iCloud backup before this step!
- Create an iCloud backup: On iPhone: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → "Back Up Now".
- Put your iPhone into DFU mode (Device Firmware Update):
- iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and newer: Quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button. Press and hold the side button until the screen goes black, then press and hold the volume down button for 5 more seconds. Release the side button but continue holding the volume down button for 5 seconds. The screen should remain black.
- iPhone 7/7 Plus: Press and hold both the side button and the volume down button for 8 seconds. After the Apple logo appears, release the side button but continue holding the volume down button for 5 seconds.
- iPhone 6s and older: Press and hold both the home button and the side (or top) button for 8 seconds. After the Apple logo appears, release the side button but continue holding the home button for 5 seconds.
- Connect your iPhone (still in DFU mode) to the computer. iTunes (Windows) or Finder (macOS) will detect the device in recovery mode and prompt you to "Restore".
- Click "Restore". The software will download and install the latest iOS version on the device.
- After a successful restore, set up your iPhone as new or restore from the iCloud backup created in step 1.
Verification
- Manually start a sync: in iTunes/Finder, click "Sync".
- Wait for the process to complete without errors.
- Check if the data from your computer (music, movies, contacts) appears on your iPhone.
- Check if a new backup appears on your computer (in iTunes: Right-click on the device → "Show in Windows Explorer" / on Mac: in Finder, the folder
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/). - Disconnect and reconnect your iPhone. The "Trust" prompt should no longer appear.
Potential Problems
Problem: iTunes/Finder doesn't see the iPhone at all (device not detected)
Solution:
- Ensure the cable is securely connected on both ends.
- Try a different USB port and cable.
- On Windows: Open Device Manager (
devmgmt.msc). Find the iPhone under "Portable Devices". Right-click → "Uninstall device". Disconnect and reconnect the iPhone to let Windows reinstall the driver. - On Mac: Go to System Information → USB. The iPhone device should be listed. If not — the issue is with the cable, port, or the iPhone itself.
Problem: Error 0xE, -50, 13000, 13010 during media sync
Solution:
- Step 5 (resetting sync settings) usually fixes this.
- Check for DRM-protected files (old purchases from the iTunes Store). Such files may not sync. Try syncing only unprotected content.
- Ensure there is enough free space on your iPhone for the files being transferred.
Problem: Sync hangs at 99% or is very slow
Solution:
- Reset trust settings (Step 3).
- Disable all unnecessary content types for syncing in iTunes/Finder (e.g., sync only music, not movies).
- Delete old, unused backups from your computer to free up space.
Problem: Sync stopped working after an iOS update
Solution:
- You must update iTunes (Windows) or macOS (Mac) to the latest version. An old iTunes version is often incompatible with the new iOS.
- If the problem persists, perform a full reset of sync settings (Step 5) and set up syncing again from scratch.
Problem: Only photos sync, but not contacts/calendars
Solution:
- In iTunes/Finder, on the "Info" (or "Contacts", "Calendars") tab, ensure the checkbox "Sync Contacts/Calendars" is checked and the correct source is selected (e.g., "Outlook" or "Address Book").
- If you use iCloud to sync contacts and calendars, disable this option on your iPhone (Settings → your name → iCloud → Contacts/Calendars → Off). Then data will sync via iTunes/Finder instead.
