Introduction / Why This Is Needed
A force restart (hard reset) is an emergency method to "revive" an iPhone that has stopped responding to touches, is stuck on a black screen, or is frozen on the Apple logo. Unlike a normal shutdown, this method works at the hardware level and resets the processor's state without affecting your data.
After following this guide, your iPhone should start up normally. This is the first and safest form of assistance when the iOS interface is frozen and standard methods (holding the power button to shut down) are unresponsive.
Requirements / Preparation
To perform a force restart, you do not need:
- Connection to a computer or charger.
- Knowledge of the password or access to settings.
- Special tools or software.
Important: Ensure you do not have any important unsaved data in open apps (e.g., an unfinished document or message). While the process itself is safe for data, the app where the crash occurred may close without saving your progress.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Identify Your iPhone Model
The button combination depends on the device's generation. Here’s how to distinguish them:
- iPhone X, XS, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and newer (all with Face ID, no Home button on the front).
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, SE (3rd generation) (has a Home button, but no Face ID).
- iPhone 7, 7 Plus (has a Home button, no headphone jack).
- iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE (1st generation) and older models (classic design with a Home button).
Step 2: Perform the Button Combination for Your Model
For iPhone 8, SE (3rd generation) and All Newer Models (with Face ID)
This is the most common case for modern devices.
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button (the top button on the left edge).
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button (the middle button on the left edge).
- Press and hold the Side button (the power button on the right edge) until the Apple logo appears.
- Keep holding even if the "slide to power off" slider appears—ignore it.
- The process may take 10 to 15 seconds.
- Release the side button. The iPhone will begin its normal boot sequence.
💡 Tip: The volume button presses must be quick and separate (not simultaneous). If you hold them too long on step 1 or 2, the system may try to take a screenshot or activate Siri.
For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus (Unique Case)
A different combination is used here, as these models don't fit into other categories.
- Simultaneously press and hold:
- The Volume Down button (on the left edge).
- The Power button (the side button on the right edge).
- Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
- Release both buttons. The device will restart.
For iPhone 6s, SE (1st generation) and All Older Models
The classic method using the Home button.
- Simultaneously press and hold:
- The Home button (the circular button on the front).
- The Power button (the top or side button, depending on the model).
- Hold both buttons until the Apple logo appears (10-15 seconds).
- Release both buttons.
Step 3: Wait for a Complete Boot
After the Apple logo appears, the boot process can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes (depending on the model and iOS version). Do not press any buttons during this time.
Verifying the Result
Successful outcome:
- The Apple logo appears on the screen.
- The standard iOS loading process occurs (a progress bar appears).
- Finally, you see the passcode entry screen (or Face ID/Touch ID prompt).
- After entering the passcode, the system loads to the home screen. All your apps, data, and settings are intact.
What constitutes a failure:
- The screen remains black, even after holding the buttons for 30 seconds.
- The Apple logo appears, but the boot does not complete (gets stuck on the progress bar or logo for longer than 5-7 minutes).
- After restarting, the original problem (freezing, unresponsive touchscreen) recurs immediately.
In these cases, proceed to the next steps in the "Possible Issues" section.
Possible Issues
Issue: Buttons unresponsive, iPhone completely dead (black screen, no vibration, no sounds)
Solution: This may be a completely drained battery. Connect the iPhone to an original charger and cable, and leave it for at least 30 minutes without interaction. Sometimes it takes a long time to "bounce back" from 0%. If the charging indicator doesn't appear after an hour, there may be an issue with the battery or charging port.
Issue: iPhone restarts but gets stuck again on the Apple logo
Solution: This indicates a critical system error or an app conflict after an update. You will need to restore iOS via a computer (Mac or PC with iTunes/Finder). Important: This process will erase all data on the iPhone if you do not have a recent iCloud or computer backup. Instructions for restoration are a separate, complex topic.
Issue: Attempting a hard reset only shows a black screen; the logo never appears
Solution: You likely aren't holding the buttons long enough or are using the wrong combination for your model. Re-check the "Step 2" section and ensure you are following the instructions for your specific model. Hold the buttons for at least 15 seconds without releasing early.
Issue: After restarting, the iPhone works but drains battery quickly or overheats
Solution: A force restart does not cause these problems. If they appear after the iPhone "came back to life," it's a sign that some app or background process was creating high CPU load, which likely caused the original freeze. Check Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most energy. Update or remove any suspicious apps.
