Introduction
An iPhone backup is a complete copy of your device's data that allows you to restore your information if you lose your phone, upgrade to a new model, or experience a system failure. Creating a backup to your computer (Windows or Mac) is a reliable way to save contacts, messages, photos, app settings, and much more without using the iCloud cloud storage. This is especially useful if you have limited iCloud storage space or prefer local storage. In this guide, you will learn how to easily and quickly back up your iPhone to a computer using iTunes (for Windows) or Finder (for macOS Catalina and later).
Requirements
Before you begin, ensure the following conditions are met:
- iPhone with iOS version 12 or later installed.
- Computer with Windows 10/11 or macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later.
- Cable: Lightning (for iPhone up to 14) or USB-C (for iPhone 15 and later) to connect the iPhone to the computer.
- Software: On Windows, the latest version of iTunes must be installed (available for download from Apple's website). On Mac with macOS Catalina and later, iTunes is not required—Finder is used for backups.
- Free space on the computer: the backup size can reach the volume of data stored on the iPhone. Check the disk space where backups are saved by default (usually the system drive).
Step 1: Prepare Your Computer and iPhone
On the computer:
- For Windows: download and install iTunes from the official Apple website. Launch it at least once for initial setup.
- For Mac: ensure macOS is updated to version 10.15 (Catalina) or later. Check for updates via System Settings → Software Update.
On the iPhone:
- Enable a screen lock passcode (Touch ID or Face ID). This is necessary for encrypting the backup by default. Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) and set a passcode.
- Connect the iPhone to a power source to avoid running out of battery during the backup process.
Step 2: Connect the iPhone to the Computer
Using a Lightning or USB-C cable, connect the iPhone to an available USB port on the computer. It is recommended to use an original Apple cable or a certified alternative, as cheap cables can cause connection errors. After connecting, the iPhone may display a "Charging" notification—this is normal.
Step 3: Trust the Computer
When connecting the iPhone to this computer for the first time, a dialog will appear on the phone asking: "Trust This Computer?". Tap "Trust", then enter your iPhone unlock passcode (code or biometrics). This action grants the computer access to the device's data to create a backup. If you accidentally tapped "Don't Trust," disconnect the cable, restart the iPhone, and reconnect it.
Step 4: Launch iTunes or Finder and Select the Device
For Windows:
- Launch iTunes.
- In the top-right corner of the iTunes window, click the iPhone icon (or select it from the Device menu).
- If iTunes does not display the device, check that it is properly connected and unlocked.
For Mac (macOS Catalina and later):
- Open Finder.
- In the sidebar under the Locations heading, select your iPhone. If the device is not displayed, ensure the cable is securely connected and the iPhone is unlocked.
- If prompted, tap "Trust" on the iPhone if the request appears again.
Step 5: Create the Backup
In the device management window that opens, find the Backups section (in iTunes) or General tab (in Finder, where the "Back Up Now" button is located).
- Select the save location:
- By default, the backup is saved to the system drive of the computer. You can choose "This Computer" (in iTunes) or leave it as is (in Finder).
- Configure encryption (recommended):
- Check the box "Encrypt local backup" (in iTunes) or "Encrypt backup" (in Finder). This protects the data with a password. Set a strong password and save it in your password manager—without the password, restoring an encrypted backup will be impossible.
- Start the backup:
- Click the "Back Up Now" button (in Finder) or "Back Up Now" (in iTunes).
- Wait for completion:
- A progress indicator will appear at the top of the window. Do not disconnect the iPhone or close the program until the message "Backup completed" appears. The time depends on the amount of data and connection speed.
Verify the Result
After successful completion, iTunes or Finder will display the time of the last backup (e.g., "Last Backup: February 17, 2026, 2:30 PM"). This confirms that the backup was created.
Additional verification on the computer:
- Windows: open File Explorer and navigate to:
C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
(theAppDatafolder may be hidden—enable the display of hidden items in File Explorer). - Mac: in Finder, go to the menu Go → Go to Folder and enter:
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
In the Backup folder, you will see one or more folders with long names (these are the backups). The folder size should correspond to the amount of data on your iPhone.
Potential Issues
iTunes/Finder does not detect the iPhone
- Ensure the cable is securely connected to both devices.
- Check that the iPhone is unlocked and you have tapped "Trust".
- Try a different USB port (preferably directly on the motherboard, not through a hub).
- On Windows: run iTunes as an administrator. Reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Support drivers via Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart both the iPhone and the computer.
Error during backup creation (e.g., "Could not back up")
- Insufficient disk space: free up space on the system drive or change the backup location (in iTunes: Edit → Preferences → Devices → Backups).
- Sync failure: restart both devices and try again.
- Trust issues: on the iPhone, go to Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy. Then reconnect the iPhone and confirm trust.
- Outdated software: update iTunes (Windows) or macOS (Mac) to the latest version.
Backup does not include photos or videos
If iCloud Photos is enabled on the iPhone, a local backup via iTunes/Finder may not save media files. Solutions:
- Disable iCloud Photos in Settings → your name → iCloud → Photos → iCloud Photos (turn off).
- Or manually copy photos to the computer via File Explorer (Windows) or Photos (Mac), then create a backup.
Forgot the password for an encrypted backup
Unfortunately, if the password is lost, the encrypted backup cannot be restored. To reset the password:
- On the iPhone, open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset.
- Select Reset Location & Privacy.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer and create a new backup without encryption or with a new password.
- The old encrypted backup will remain in the
Backupfolder but will be inaccessible without the old password. Delete it manually if not needed.
