Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Modern Android smartphones quickly fill up with data: photos, videos, apps, cache. When storage runs out, the phone starts to lag, updates and new apps can no longer be installed. This guide will help you free up from 5 to 50+ GB of space on your Android device, using both built-in system tools and proven third-party methods. You'll learn to distinguish files that are safe to delete from critical ones and set up regular storage maintenance.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure:
- You have an up-to-date version of Android (8.0 or higher). Menu item names may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer (Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, etc.) and the skin (One UI, MIUI, ColorOS).
- You have administrator privileges on the device (usually not required for standard cleanup, but may be needed to delete some system files via a file manager with elevated privileges).
- You have a backup of important data (photos, contacts, documents) to Google Drive or a PC—in case of accidental deletion.
- You have a file manager installed (e.g., Google's 'Files' or 'Mi File Manager').
Step 1: Analyze Storage Usage
First, you need to understand what exactly is filling up the memory.
- Open Settings → Storage (or Device storage, Storage & memory).
- The system will show a breakdown by category: Apps, Images, Videos, Audio, Downloads, Documents, Cache, Other files.
- Note down which category occupies the most space. That's what we'll focus on.
- Cache: temporary app files, safe to delete.
- Other files: often contain hidden cache, remnants of deleted apps, logs.
- Downloads: folder with files downloaded from the browser or messengers.
💡 Tip: On some firmware (e.g., Xiaomi), there is a "Free up space" or "Smart Cleanup" button in this same menu. You can use it for a quick start, but we'll cover manual methods for greater control.
Step 2: Clear Cache and Data of Unnecessary Apps
Method A: Bulk Cleanup via System Tool
- In Settings → Storage, find the "Free up space" (or similar) option.
- The system will suggest deleting:
- Cache of all apps (safe).
- Old downloads.
- Unused apps (those you haven't launched in N months).
- Duplicate photos (if the feature is available).
- Select the desired categories and confirm deletion.
Method B: Manual Cleanup Per App
If you want to be precise:
- Settings → Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Sort by size (in the sort menu, select "Size").
- Select an app that is not used often (e.g., old games, banking apps you open once a year).
- Tap "Storage" (or "Storage usage").
- Tap "Clear cache"—this deletes temporary files without affecting your data.
- If space is still critical, tap "Clear data" (or "Clear storage"). Warning! This will reset the app: it will delete logins, settings, and game saves. Use only if you're willing to log in again.
⚠️ Important: Do not clear the cache of system apps (Google Play Store, Google Play Services, the system launcher) unless absolutely necessary—this can cause temporary glitches.
Step 3: Delete Downloaded Files and Duplicates
Media files are the main "space-hogs."
- Open your file manager (e.g., Files by Google).
- Go to the "Downloads" folder. Review its contents:
- Delete old PDF documents,
.apkinstallation files, archives you no longer need. - In your browser (Chrome, Yandex.Browser), check the download history (
chrome://downloads).
- Delete old PDF documents,
- Check messenger folders:
- Telegram:
Telegram/Telegram Documents,Telegram/Telegram Images(if auto-deletion is not enabled). - WhatsApp:
WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Images,WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Video. - VK, Instagram, Discord—similarly.
- Telegram:
- Delete duplicate photos/videos. To do this:
- In Google Photos, tap "Manage" → "Duplicates" (if the feature is available).
- Or use third-party apps (see Step 6).
Step 4: Move Media Files to a Memory Card or Cloud
If you have a microSD card:
- Open the file manager.
- Find the folders DCIM (camera photos/videos), Pictures, Movies, Music.
- Select files (you can filter by date: older than 6 months) → Move → choose a folder on the SD card (create similar folders).
- After verifying the files are copied, delete them from internal storage.
Cloud (recommended if you don't have a memory card):
- Install Google Photos (if you haven't already).
- Enable sync (backup) in the settings.
- After full upload, tap "Free up space" in the app—it will delete local copies of media files already uploaded to the cloud, leaving previews.
- Yandex.Disk, Dropbox, OneDrive work similarly.
Step 5: Clean "Hidden" and "System" Files (Be Careful!)
This is where the real "space-hogs" like .thumbnails (thumbnails) and .log (logs) reside.
- Connect your phone to a computer via USB in "File transfer" (MTP) mode.
- On the PC, open the phone's folder (usually
Internal shared storage). - Enable showing hidden files:
- Windows: In Explorer, "View" → check "Hidden items".
- macOS/Linux:
Cmd+Shift+.or Finder settings.
- Find and delete:
- The
.thumbnailsfolder (minus-previews for all images, can take up gigabytes). .log,.tmp,.cachefiles in the root and in app folders.- The
Android/data/com.google.android.apps.photosfolder (if you don't use Google Photos)—be careful, it may contain local media.
- The
- Do NOT delete:
Android, system, datafolders (system).DCIM,Pictures,Moviesfolders (if you didn't move them manually).- Files with the
.apkextension (if they are installation files you want to keep).
Step 6: Use Specialized Utilities (Optional)
If manual cleanup didn't yield results or is inconvenient:
- Files by Google (official from Google):
- Scans for junk files (remnants of deleted apps, temporary files), duplicates, large files.
- Shows recommendations for deletion.
- Safe, as it's from Google.
- SD Maid 2 (paid, but has a trial):
- Deep junk scanner (including hidden system files).
- App database cleanup (speeds up operation).
- Duplicate finder by hash (not just by name).
- Important: after installation, grant file access permission and ADB privileged access (via connecting to a PC as per the in-app instructions). This grants access to system junk files.
- CCleaner (well-known, but requires caution on Android):
- Can delete cache, browser history, unused apps.
- Risk: sometimes aggressively suggests deleting needed files. Always review the list before cleaning.
⚠️ Warning: Never use "memory boosters," "cleaners" with names like "Phone Cleaner," "Super Cleaner" from unknown developers. They often:
- Don't remove anything useful.
- Show ads.
- Can collect your data.
- Sometimes create junk files themselves.
Verify the Result
- Go back to Settings → Storage.
- Check the free space. It should have increased by several gigabytes.
- Open your file manager and check the folders you cleaned. Ensure you didn't delete needed files.
- Launch a few apps you cleared the cache from—they might load slightly slower the first time, which is normal.
- If space runs out quickly again, check if photos/videos are being auto-downloaded in messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp). Disable auto-download of media in these apps' settings.
Possible Issues
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| App won't launch after cache cleanup | Clear that app's data (reset) or reinstall it. |
| Free space didn't change after deleting files | The files might have been in the cloud (e.g., Google Photos with "Free up space" enabled). Check if something is syncing back. Also check if system files (e.g., OS updates) are taking up space. |
| Accidentally deleted an important file | If the file was on internal storage, try recovering it immediately with a data recovery program (e.g., DiskDigger, EaseUS MobiSaver) without writing new data to the disk. If it was on an SD card, recovery is easier. |
| 'Other files' still takes up space, but folders appear empty | These could be hidden system files or remnants of deleted apps. Use SD Maid 2 with ADB access or connect the phone to a PC and enable showing hidden files. |
| Memory card not visible or accessible after cleanup | Reboot the phone. If the problem persists, format the card via Settings → Storage → Format (first copy its data!). |
What's Next?
- Check your storage regularly, once a month.
- Enable auto-cleanup of cache in Settings → Storage (if available).
- Enable video/photo compression in messengers before sending.
- Use Google Photos with the "Free up space" option.
