Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Notification management on Android is a key aspect of a comfortable smartphone experience. Constant pop-up messages not only distract but also drain the battery. This guide will help you take control of all notifications: disable unnecessary ones, set importance levels, and customize alerts for each app. After completing it, you'll have a quieter and more efficient device experience.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure that:
- You have a device running Android 8.0 (Oreo) or higher (recommended, as notification channels are available from this version). Basic settings are available for older versions.
- You know the password or pattern unlock to access settings (if set).
- The apps whose notifications you want to configure are already installed.
Step 1: Opening Notification Settings
First, go to the system notification settings. The path may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer and Android version:
- Open Settings (the gear icon).
- Scroll down and find the Apps & notifications or simply Notifications section on some versions.
- Tap on Notifications or Notification settings.
💡 Tip: On devices with custom skins (Samsung One UI, Xiaomi MIUI), the path may be: Settings → Notifications and status bar → Notifications.
Step 2: Selecting an App
On the screen that opens, you'll see a list of all apps that can send notifications, or a See all apps button:
- Scroll through the list or use the search by app name.
- Tap on the desired app to open its specific notification settings.
Step 3: Managing Notification Categories (Channels)
Starting with Android 8.0, developers can divide an app's notifications into categories (channels), such as "Messages," "Updates," "Ads." This provides finer control:
- In the notification settings for the selected app, you'll see a list of categories.
- For each category, the following are available:
- A toggle to enable/disable notifications for that channel.
- Importance:
- High: sound, pop-up notifications, screen light.
- Medium: sound, but no pop-up windows.
- Low: only in the shade, no sound.
- Minimal: only an icon in the status bar.
- Additional options (available when tapping the category): sound, vibration, display on the lock screen, LED notification light settings.
- If the app does not support channels (older versions), you'll only see the general Notifications toggle.
⚠️ Important: Disabling all categories is equivalent to disabling all notifications for the app. Some apps (e.g., messengers) may require notifications to function—in this case, configure only the unwanted categories.
Step 4: Additional Settings and General Management
Besides categories, there are system options affecting all notifications:
- Do Not Disturb mode:
- Enable it in quick settings (swipe down from the top of the screen) or in Settings → Sound → Do Not Disturb.
- Set exceptions for priority apps (e.g., calls).
- Priority notifications:
- In Settings → Apps & notifications → Notifications → Advanced (or similar), you can specify which apps can interrupt Do Not Disturb mode.
- Notifications on the lock screen:
- In Settings → Security & lock screen → Notifications on lock screen, choose which notifications to show (all, only important, hide content).
Step 5: Completely Disabling Notifications for an App
If you want to prevent an app from showing any notifications:
- Return to the app's general settings (not the categories): Settings → Apps → select app.
- Find the Notifications or Allow notifications item.
- Turn off the toggle. This action will disable all notification channels for that app, even if they were enabled individually.
Verifying the Result
After configuring, ensure the changes work:
- Launch the app for which you changed notifications.
- Trigger a test notification (e.g., send yourself a message in a messenger or refresh a feed in a news app).
- Check:
- Whether the notification appeared (pop-up window, status bar icon, sound/vibration).
- If you disabled them, notifications should not appear.
- Restart the device and check again to ensure the settings persist.
Possible Issues
You may encounter difficulties when managing notifications:
Notifications still arrive after disabling
- Cause: The app uses an incorrect channel or a foreground service (e.g., for music or navigation).
- Solution:
- Check all notification categories in the app's settings—perhaps not all are disabled.
- In Settings → Apps → app → Battery optimization (or similar), ensure the app is not restricted in background activity.
- For system apps (e.g., Phone), disabling notifications may not be possible.
Cannot find notification settings for an app
- Cause: The manufacturer has changed the interface (e.g., in MIUI or EMUI).
- Solution:
- In Settings, use the search for "notifications."
- Look for settings in Apps → select app → Notifications.
- For some shells (Samsung), the path is: Settings → Apps → app → Notifications.
App works incorrectly after disabling notifications
- Cause: Some apps (messengers, antiviruses) depend on notifications for background synchronization.
- Solution:
- Instead of completely disabling, set importance to "Low" or "Minimal."
- Disable only noisy categories (e.g., "Ads"), leaving critical ones ("Messages").
- Check if the app has internal notification settings (e.g., in WhatsApp: Settings → Notifications).
###Notifications don't appear even though enabled
- Cause: The app is restricted by battery optimization or power-saving mode.
- Solution:
- Settings → Battery → Battery optimization (or "Unrestricted data" for background work) → find the app and set it to "Not optimized."
- Disable power saving temporarily for testing.
