Introduction / Why This Is Needed

A common issue with Android smartphones is gradual slowdown over time. This is caused by the accumulation of temporary files (cache), suboptimal background process behavior, and outdated system components. This guide will help you improve interface responsiveness, reduce app launch times, and extend battery life without installing third-party software or requiring root access.

Requirements / Preparation

Before you begin, ensure the following:

  1. Your device is running Android 8.0 (Oreo) or newer. Menu interfaces may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer (Samsung, Xiaomi, etc.).
  2. There is sufficient free space on the device (at least 500 MB) for temporary operations.
  3. You have access to the primary account on the device (with administrator privileges).
  4. It is recommended to connect the device to a charger to prevent it from powering off during the process.

Step 1: Diagnosis: Find the "Memory Hogs"

First, you need to understand which apps or system services consume the most random-access memory (RAM).

  1. Open Settings (⚙️).
  2. Navigate to the "Apps" or "Apps & notifications" section.
  3. Tap the three dots (menu) in the top-right corner and select "Special features" (on some firmware — "Developer options" or "Development"). If this option is not present, go to "About phone""Build number" and tap it 7 times to activate developer mode.
  4. Find and select the "Memory usage" or "Memory cache" option.
  5. In the window that opens, you will see a list of processes sorted by the amount of RAM they consume. Pay attention to the top 3 apps in the "Background processes" section. These are the main culprits behind the slowdowns.

Step 2: Clear System and App Cache

Accumulated cache (temporary files used to speed up operations) can become redundant over time and consume valuable resources.

  1. Clear system cache:
    • Go back to Settings"Storage" (or "Device memory").
    • Tap "Clear cache". Confirm the action. This step is safe and will not delete your personal files.
  2. Clear cache for specific "memory hogs" (from Step 1):
    • Open Settings"Apps" again.
    • Find and select the first app from your list.
    • Tap "Storage".
    • Tap "Clear cache". Caution: Do not tap "Clear data," as this will delete logins, settings, and in-app history!
    • Repeat for the other two apps.

Step 3: Limit Background Activity

After clearing the cache, you need to prevent it from being quickly repopulated and stop apps from "stealing" resources in the background.

  1. Via battery optimization settings:
    • For each "memory hog" from Step 1: Settings"Apps"app name"Battery optimization".
    • Select "Restrict" or "Don't optimize" based on your preference:
      • Restrict — the system will force-stop the app in the background, saving RAM and battery. Suitable for social networks and messengers (but you won't receive instant notifications).
      • Don't optimize — the app will be allowed to run freely in the background. Use this for music players, navigation apps, or critical services.
  2. Via developer settings (stricter control):
    • Return to "Developer options" (enabled in Step 1).
    • Find the "Background process limit" setting.
    • Select "At most 4 processes" (Standard limit) or "At most 3 processes". Do not select "No background processes" — this can disrupt system functionality (like synchronization and widgets).

Step 4: Check and Install System Updates

Outdated system software is a frequent cause of slowdowns. Updates contain security patches and performance optimizations.

  1. Open Settings"Software update" or "System update".
  2. Tap "Check for updates".
  3. If an update is available, download and install it. The device may reboot.
  4. Don't forget to update key apps: open the Google Play Store"My apps & games""Update all".

Verifying the Results

After completing all steps, reboot your device (hold the power button → "Reboot"). Then:

  1. Check the launch speed of apps that previously felt slow.
  2. Go back to Settings"Apps""Special features""Memory usage". The total amount of RAM used in idle mode should have decreased.
  3. Scroll through the app list in Settings"Apps". System processes (Adaptive icons, Google Play services, etc.) should not be consuming suspiciously large amounts of memory (>500 MB) in the background.

Potential Issues

  • After clearing the cache, an app requires you to log in again. This is normal. App cache and data are stored separately. We only cleared the cache, but some apps (like browsers) may store sessions within the cache. You will need to log in again.
  • Notifications (Telegram, WhatsApp) stop arriving after limiting background processes. Go back to the battery optimization settings for that app and select "Don't optimize".
  • The "Background process limit" option is missing in developer settings. This depends on the manufacturer. Instead, look in Settings"Apps""Special features" for options like "Standby apps" or "Battery optimization" for individual apps.
  • System update is unavailable, but the device is new. Some manufacturers (especially in the budget segment) do not provide long-term support. In this case, focus on Steps 2 and 3 (cache clearing and managing background processes).

F.A.Q.
