What Does Error 4013 Mean on iOS 13
A failure with code 4013 occurs during the firmware installation process: the device freezes on the "Preparing Update" or "Installing iOS" screen. The system reports that the update failed and prompts you to try again. This error indicates an interruption in writing files to internal storage while unpacking the archive. Most often, the process stops due to insufficient storage, a dropped network connection, or a corrupted cached package.
Causes
- Insufficient storage space. Properly unpacking iOS 13 requires at least 2–3 GB of free space. If less is available, the system cannot create temporary working files.
- Corrupted update cache. The download was interrupted midway due to a Wi-Fi failure or a phone restart. The corrupted file blocks subsequent installation attempts.
- Network configuration conflicts. Aggressive DNS filters, VPNs, or outdated router certificates can interfere with a stable connection to Apple's servers.
- Outdated iTunes/Finder version. The computer is running an older software version that fails to recognize new firmware signatures or incorrectly handles the sync protocol.
- Overheating or battery degradation. At high temperatures, the CPU throttles its clock speed, which can cause timeouts when writing system files.
Solutions
Method 1: Free Up Space and Restart
Before trying again, ensure there is enough free space on the drive for the system to operate.
- Open
Settings → General → iPhone Storage(or iPad Storage). - Delete large apps, messenger caches, or videos until you have at least 3 GB free.
- Perform a full restart of the device (press and hold the power button, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on).
Restarting clears temporary RAM and releases locks on system processes.
Method 2: Delete the Corrupted Update File
If the system downloaded a corrupted archive, it will endlessly attempt to unpack it.
- Go to
Settings → General → iPhone Storage. - Scroll through the app list and find the entry with the iOS icon labeled "iOS 13.x".
- Tap on it and select
Delete Update. - Return to
Settings → General → Software Updateand start the download again.
💡 Tip: Do not interrupt the file download. Keep the device plugged into a charger and stay within strong Wi-Fi range until the process completes.
Method 3: Reset Network Settings
A stable connection is critical for verifying Apple's signature and downloading the firmware without interruptions.
- Open
Settings → General → Reset. - Select
Reset Network Settings. - Confirm the action. The device will restart, and all saved Wi-Fi passwords will be erased.
- Reconnect to your network and attempt the update again.
Method 4: Update via Computer (iTunes / Finder)
A wired connection eliminates network drops and establishes a direct link to Apple's servers.
- Install the latest available version of
iTunes(Windows) or openFinder(macOS Catalina and later). - Connect your iPhone/iPad using the original cable. Unlock the screen and tap "Trust This Computer".
- In the application, select your device.
- In the "Summary" tab, click the
Updatebutton (not "Restore"). - Follow the on-screen instructions. The computer will automatically download the latest package and install it.
⚠️ Important: The "Update" function preserves your data. The "Restore" button completely erases the device. Choose carefully.
Method 5: Restore in Recovery Mode
Use this method only if the previous steps fail. It requires a prior backup.
- Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes/Finder.
- For iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, SE (2nd/3rd gen): Quickly press
Volume Up, thenVolume Down, then press and hold theSide Buttonuntil the recovery screen appears (cable and laptop icon). - For iPhone 7/7 Plus: Press and hold both the
Side ButtonandVolume Downsimultaneously. - A window will appear on your computer offering to "Update" or "Restore". Select
Restore. - Wait for the process to complete. The system will download a clean firmware image and install it from scratch.
Once finished, set up the device from a backup created before the failure.
Prevention
- Keep the battery charge above 20% or connect the charging cable before starting the installation.
- Update the system regularly. Do not postpone major updates for months, as accumulated changes are harder to install in a single session.
- Use a 5 GHz home network or a wired connection when updating via PC.
- Create local or cloud backups before every major update to eliminate the risk of data loss in case of hardware failures.
