What Does a Face ID Error Mean
Face ID is a biometric authentication system on iPhone that uses the TrueDepth front camera. The error manifests through the following symptoms:
- Instead of the Face ID icon in the password section, the message "Face ID is unavailable. Try again later" appears.
- When attempting to unlock the phone or use payment services (Apple Pay), the system prompts you to enter your password.
- In Settings → Face ID & Passcode, the option to add a face is missing, or the error "Face ID setup failed" is displayed.
The error indicates a failure in the hardware module (cameras, sensors) or software (iOS, security settings).
Causes
- Temporary software glitch. iOS or individual processes responsible for Face ID have frozen.
- Insufficient free memory. The system requires RAM to run recognition algorithms.
- TrueDepth camera issues. Dirt on the lens, scratches on the protective glass, damage to the flex cable or sensors (dot projector, infrared camera).
- Security settings conflict. Overly strict settings (e.g., requiring a password immediately after restart) or activation of "Low Power Mode".
- Incompatibility after display replacement. Replacing the screen with a non-original or uncertified part can disrupt Face ID functionality due to lack of calibration.
- Hardware malfunction. Failure of TrueDepth module components (rare, but possible after a drop or water exposure).
Method 1: Basic Device Restart
This is the first and most effective step for resolving temporary glitches.
- Press and hold simultaneously the power button (used for restarting) and any volume button.
- When the "Slide to Power Off" slider appears, release the buttons and slide it to the right.
- After 30 seconds, press the power button to turn on the iPhone.
- After booting, check if Face ID works.
💡 Tip: If a standard restart didn't help, perform a force restart (see Method 5).
Method 2: Check and Install iOS Updates
Face ID errors are often fixed in system updates, which contain patches for camera drivers and biometric algorithms.
- Open Settings → General → Software Update.
- If a new iOS version is available, tap Download and Install.
- After installation, restart the device and check Face ID.
⚠️ Important: Ensure the device has more than 50% battery and is connected to Wi-Fi. The process will take 10-30 minutes.
Method 3: Reset and Reconfigure Face ID
If Face ID data may be corrupted, you need to delete it and create a new one.
- Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter your current passcode.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Confirm the action.
- Return to this menu and tap Set Up Face ID.
- Follow the on-screen instructions: position your face in the frame, slowly turning your head so the system captures all angles.
💡 Tip: When setting up, use your primary appearance (without glasses if you usually don't wear them). Add an alternate appearance if you frequently wear glasses or change hairstyles.
Method 4: Check the Hardware (TrueDepth Camera)
Face ID depends on the integrity and cleanliness of the module at the top of the display.
- Visual inspection: Look at the cutout at the top of the screen. Ensure:
- There are no deep scratches, cracks, or chips on the glass over the cameras.
- There is no dirt, oily smudges, or dust. Gently wipe the area with a soft, lint-free cloth (like microfiber).
- There are no signs of moisture or condensation inside (droplets or fogging may be visible).
- Check in the Camera app:
- Open Camera and switch to the front-facing (selfie) camera.
- Enable Portrait mode (the "f" icon).
- If the camera cannot detect your face or error messages appear — there is a hardware issue.
- Light sensor test: Dial
*#*#4636#*#*in Phone (doesn't work on all models). In the "Phone information" menu, check if the light sensor works. While not a direct TrueDepth test, failures can be related.
If physical damage is found or the camera doesn't work correctly, you need to contact a service center for diagnostics and module replacement.
Method 5: Force Restart (Hard Reset)
This is a more radical system restart method than a standard shutdown. It forcibly terminates all processes.
For iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 and newer:
- Quickly press and release the volume up button.
- Quickly press and release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the power button (used for restarting) until the Apple logo appears (about 10-15 seconds).
- Release the button and wait for the device to fully boot.
For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus:
- Simultaneously press and hold the volume down button and the power button.
- Hold until the Apple logo appears.
- Release the buttons.
After restarting, check Face ID.
Method 6: Restore iOS via Computer (Last Resort)
If none of the above methods helped, the problem may be deep system file corruption. In this case, a full iOS restore is required.
Warning: This process will erase all data from the iPhone. Before starting, make a backup via iCloud or computer.
- Preparation:
- Install the latest version of iTunes (on Windows) or open Finder (on macOS).
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a Lightning/USB-C cable.
- Force recovery mode:
- Perform a force restart (Method 5), but do not release the buttons when the Apple logo appears.
- Continue holding until the recovery mode screen (cable and iTunes/Finder) appears.
- Release the buttons.
- Restore:
- A window will appear in iTunes/Finder offering Restore or Update.
- Select Restore. The system will download and install the latest iOS version on the device.
- The process will take 15-40 minutes. The iPhone may restart several times.
- Set up as new:
- After completion, set up the iPhone. Do not restore from a backup if the issue was a software glitch — this could bring back the error. Set up Face ID anew during the setup process.
If Face ID still doesn't work after the restore, there is a high probability the problem is hardware-related (TrueDepth module failure). Contact an authorized Apple service center.
Prevention
To avoid Face ID issues in the future:
- Use a case that protects the top portion. Shield the TrueDepth module from impacts and scratches if the device is dropped.
- Regularly clean the display cutout. Gently wipe the area with a microfiber cloth without chemicals. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- Avoid extreme temperatures. Do not leave the iPhone in direct sunlight in a car or in freezing cold
