What the ACTIVATION Error Means
Activation Lock is a built-in Apple security mechanism that triggers when you attempt to set up an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch after a factory reset, logic board replacement, or DFU mode restore. The screen will prompt you to enter the Apple ID and password that were used to enable the Find My feature.
This error does not indicate a hardware failure or an iOS crash. It is a deliberate security measure designed to prevent unauthorized use of the device. If you don't remember your credentials or purchased the device secondhand, the activation process will halt at the Wi-Fi connection step and prompt for iCloud account details.
Causes
- Factory reset without signing out of iCloud beforehand. The system automatically retains the link to the Apple ID.
- Change of ownership without official unpairing. The seller did not go to
Настройки → Apple ID → Выйти, leaving the device linked to their account. - Updated contact information for your Apple ID. You changed your phone number or email address, but the locked device still has the old login stored.
- Service repairs or component replacements. When replacing the display, battery, or cellular module, some authorized service centers fail to disable the protection, which triggers the lock upon first boot.
- Attempting to use a lost or stolen device. The lock activates automatically when a SIM card change or new setup is detected.
Solutions
Method 1: Recover Access to Your Apple ID
If you are the owner but have forgotten your password, use the official password reset tool.
- Go to
iforgot.apple.com. - Enter your Apple ID (usually an email address or phone number).
- Verify your identity using a trusted device, SMS, or by answering your security question.
- Create a new password and enter it on the activation screen.
💡 Tip: If two-factor authentication is enabled, the verification code will be sent to another one of your Apple devices or via SMS. Make sure the phone number associated with your account is up to date.
Method 2: Remove the Device via iCloud.com
If you have access to the account but the device itself is unavailable, you can unlink it remotely.
- Open
iCloud.com/findand sign in with your Apple ID. - In the top bar, select "All Devices" and click on the locked iPhone or iPad.
- If the device is online, click "Erase", wait for the process to complete, and then select "Remove from Account".
- If the device is offline, click "Remove from Account" immediately. The lock will be removed the next time it connects to the internet.
Method 3: Submit an Official Request to Apple Support
Use this method if you've forgotten your Apple ID and cannot recover it, but you still have proof of purchase.
- Prepare the original receipt, warranty card, or invoice that lists the device's serial number or IMEI.
- Go to
al-support.apple.comand select "Activation Lock Support Request". - Fill out the form, enter the serial number, and upload scanned copies of your documents.
- Wait for an email confirmation. Once approved, restart the device—the Apple ID prompt will disappear.
⚠️ Important: Apple does not accept digital receipts without proper details, screenshots of messages, or receipts from unauthorized resellers. The document must include the purchase date, store name, and exact model.
Method 4: Unlink Through the Previous Owner
When buying used equipment, the only safe option is to ask the seller to remotely unlink the device.
- Send the seller the link to
al-support.apple.com/support/activation-lock. - Ask them to enter the device's serial number and click "Continue".
- They will need to verify the action using a code sent to their Apple ID.
- Once confirmed, perform a factory reset again (
Настройки → Основные → Перенос или сброс → Стереть контент и настройки) and set up the iPhone from scratch.
Prevention
- Always go to
Настройки → [Ваше имя] → Выйтиbefore selling, sending in for repair, or recycling the device. - Keep digital and paper receipts for at least 2 years. They are useful not only for warranty claims but also for recovering iCloud access.
- Regularly verify that your backup phone number and email address are up to date in your Apple ID security settings.
- When buying secondhand, insist on seeing the activation screen after a full reset during the meetup. A seller's refusal is a clear sign of a hidden account link.
