Introduction: Why Clear Cache?
Cache (temporary files) accumulates on iOS devices when using apps and the Safari browser. Over time, it can take up significant disk space and slow down the system. Clearing the cache helps:
- Free up memory – especially important for devices with small storage.
- Speed up performance – system processes and apps become more responsive.
- Fix crashes – sometimes corrupted cache causes app errors.
This guide shows how to safely clear the cache on an iPhone or iPad without losing personal data.
Requirements / Preparation
Before you begin, ensure:
- You have a device running iOS 14 or later (instructions apply to most iPhone and iPad models).
- Access to device Settings (no password required if you have access).
- For reinstalling apps – internet connection and App Store account.
- Backup (recommended): if you are deleting apps, make sure important data is synced with iCloud or another cloud service.
💡 Tip: If you are unsure about cache size, first check the "Storage" section in Settings to see which apps take up the most space.
Step 1: Check Storage Usage
Before clearing cache, determine where it accumulates:
- Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
- Go to General → iPhone Storage (or "iPad Storage").
- Wait for the system to calculate usage. You will see a list of apps sorted by size, and the total used and free space.
Note apps that take up unusually large amounts of space (for example, "Documents & Data" significantly exceeds "App"). This often indicates accumulated cache.
Step 2: Clear Safari Cache
Safari is the default browser on iOS, and its cache can reach hundreds of megabytes:
- In Settings, find and open Safari.
- Scroll down to the Privacy & Security section.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data.
- Confirm the action in the pop-up window.
⚠️ Important: This action will delete all browsing history, cookies, and cache. You will be signed out of all websites where you were logged in, and you will need to log in again.
Step 3: Clear Cache for Individual Apps
Many popular apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Instagram, Spotify) have built-in options to clear cache:
- In Settings, scroll down to the section with your apps.
- Select the app that you think has accumulated a lot of cache (based on the Storage section).
- Look for options with names like:
- Clear Cache
- Delete Data (caution: this may also delete user data, such as cached messages in messengers).
- Reset Cache or Clear Temporary Files.
- Tap the desired option and confirm.
Not all apps provide this option. If it's not available, move to the next step.
Step 4: Delete and Reinstall Apps
For apps without built-in cache clearing, deletion is the most effective method:
- On the home screen, find the icon of the app you want to clear.
- Press and hold the icon until a menu appears, then select Remove App → Delete App.
- Confirm deletion.
- Open the App Store, find the app in the "Purchased" section or via search, and reinstall it.
💡 Tip: If the app supports cloud sync (e.g., via iCloud or your own account), your data (settings, progress) will restore after logging in again. For games, check if progress is tied to Game Center or the developer's account.
Step 5: Restart the Device
After clearing the cache, restart the device so the system updates storage information and terminates processes:
- Hold the power button (and the volume up/down button on iPhone X and later) until the power slider appears.
- Slide to power off the device.
- After 10 seconds, press the power button to turn it back on.
Verify the Result
- Go back to Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
- Check if free space has increased. The size of some apps should have decreased.
- Test key apps (especially those whose cache you cleared). They may take slightly longer to load on first launch – this is normal as data needs to be reloaded.
Possible Issues
- Cache not clearing: Ensure you selected the correct option in the app's settings. Some apps (e.g., mail) store data on servers, and local cache is minimal.
- Data loss after app deletion: If you didn't sync data with the cloud, it may be lost permanently. Always check if the app has a backup feature.
- Device running slower after clearing: After clearing the cache, apps need to reload frequently used data. Give them a few minutes to run, and speed should normalize.
- No clear option in settings: This means the developer did not include such a function. In this case, deleting the app is the only option, or you can wait for an update that adds clearing.
