Introduction / Why This Is Needed
Factory Reset (hard reset) is a procedure that completely returns an Android device to its original state, as it was when first turned on. It irreversibly deletes all user data, apps, settings, and cache from the internal storage.
When this is necessary:
- The device is running very slowly, lagging even after clearing the cache.
- You plan to sell or give away the phone and want to completely erase your data.
- The system fails to boot, constantly reboots (bootloop), or freezes on the logo.
- You forgot the password/pattern to unlock the screen and don't remember your Google account credentials.
- After an unsuccessful firmware flash or installation of an unstable custom ROM.
Result: After a successful reset, the phone will start the initial setup process as if it were just purchased. You will need to go through the Wi-Fi pairing stage, sign in to your Google account, and reinstall apps again.
Requirements / Preparation
Before starting, you must perform the following actions. This is the most important step, as the process is irreversible.
- Battery level. Ensure the battery is at least 80% charged. A reset interrupted by a low battery can cause serious errors and leave the device stuck in Recovery Mode.
- Backup. Save all important data:
- Photos and videos: Google Photos, Yandex.Disk, Dropbox, or copy to a computer.
- Contacts and calendar: Ensure they are synchronized with your Google account (
Settings→Accounts→Google→Sync). - Messages (SMS/MMS): Use third-party apps (SMS Backup & Restore) or the backup function in your messaging app.
- Documents and files: Manually copy to cloud storage or a PC.
- Apps and their data: Some apps (e.g., games) have built-in cloud saves. For others, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root) or simply note the app list for reinstallation.
- Account credentials. Write down the login and password for the Google account linked to the device. After the reset, on devices with Android 5.1+, the system may require these credentials for activation (Factory Reset Protection - FRP, a security measure against resetting stolen phones).
- Find the button combination for Recovery Mode. Usually, it's Volume Up + Power. Check for your specific model (especially Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi, which may have different combinations).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Reset via Settings Menu (Recommended Method)
Use this method if the system boots normally.
- Open the Settings app (⚙️).
- Scroll down and find the System section (or Additional settings, General settings — depends on the skin).
- Inside, find the Reset option (may be called Reset & recovery, Factory data reset).
- Select Factory data reset (or Reset settings).
- The system will show a list of data to be erased (accounts, system settings, apps, files). Tap Reset phone (or Erase all data).
- If a password, PIN, or pattern is set on the device, the system will ask for it to confirm.
- Confirm the action. The phone will reboot and start the wiping process. This takes between 1 and 10 minutes.
💡 Tip: At the confirmation stage, there is often an "Erase all data" button. Read the button text carefully to avoid accidentally canceling the action.
Step 2: Reset via Recovery Mode (Emergency Method)
Use this method if the phone does not boot into the system, freezes on the logo, or you forgot the password and cannot access settings.
- Completely power off the phone.
- Hold the button combination to enter Recovery Mode. Standard combinations:
- Volume Up + Power (on most devices).
- Volume Down + Power (on some older or Chinese models).
- Home button + Volume Up + Power (older Samsung).
- Search online for the exact combination for your model: "Your model recovery mode".
- Release the buttons when the Recovery menu appears (usually in English). Navigation is done with the volume buttons (up/down), selection with the power button.
- In the menu, find and select Wipe data/factory reset.
- On the next screen, confirm the action by selecting Yes (or
Factory data reset). The process will begin. - After completion, return to the main Recovery menu and select Reboot system now. The phone will boot as new.
Step 3: What to Do After the Reset
- After rebooting, you will see the initial setup screen (Welcome screen).
- Go through the standard setup: language selection, Wi-Fi connection.
- At the Google account sign-in stage, enter the login and password for the account that was linked to the phone before the reset. This is mandatory to bypass FRP protection.
- Restore data from the backup you created earlier (e.g., from Google Drive or Google Photos).
- Install the necessary apps from Google Play.
Verification of Result
- The device has fully rebooted and shows the initial setup screen.
- All pre-installed apps (both from the manufacturer and Google) are present.
- In Settings → System → About phone, the Android version and Build number show standard factory values (not custom ones).
- In Settings → Apps, none of your old apps and their data are present.
- If the reset was performed to solve a problem (e.g., freezes), check if the symptom is gone.
Possible Issues
⚠️ Problem 1: Phone is stuck on the logo (Bootloop) after the reset.Solution: Enter Recovery Mode again (Step 2). Select Wipe cache partition. After it completes, perform Wipe data/factory reset again. If that doesn't help, the issue may be with the firmware — a reflash via PC software (Odin for Samsung, Mi Flash for Xiaomi) will be required.
⚠️ Problem 2: Recovery Mode shows "No command" or "Error".Solution: This usually happens due to an interrupted reset. Try performing Wipe cache partition, then Factory reset again. If the error persists, the system partition may be corrupted. In this case, a firmware reflash is needed.
⚠️ Problem 3: You forgot your Google account credentials, and the system requires them for activation (FRP).Solution: A Factory Reset without unlinking the account activates FRP protection. You must recall the login and password for the account that was on the device before the reset. If this is impossible, contacting the manufacturer's service center with proof of purchase is the only legal recourse.
